Mechanical Improvements at Paramount Centre

Bird Infrastructure served as general contractor on this multi-purpose sports and entertainment complex in Mississauga, Ontario, managing the supply and installation of mechanical improvements and providing all labour and subcontractors.

The scope of work encompassed HVAC upgrades and the supply and installation of four air handling units, a make-up air unit, nine supply fans, four boilers, ammonia compressors, and an evaporative condenser. Bird also managed the complete replacement of the building automation system (BAS), working closely with the subcontractor to ensure a seamless upgrade that included new lighting controls, a monitoring and targeting system, and all associated plumbing, piping, valves, and accessories.

Keeping Mechanical on Ice

The Paramount Sports Complex, home to four ice rinks, required the installation of 10 ammonia compressors, two evaporative coolers, 11 VIL pumps, 11 VFDs, two horizontal split pumps, and five heat exchangers to ensure optimal ice conditions.

Project Details

Bird meticulously planned a phased installation approach to minimize facility downtime and ensure uninterrupted building operations. Our team proactively addressed interfacing challenges between the new and existing systems to avoid operational disruptions. We worked closely with consultants to gain a thorough understanding of the design, ensuring the installations allowed for easy maintenance and repairs, ultimately reducing downtime and service costs.

Team Selection

Bird assembled all subcontractors, including sheet metal, electrical, BAS, insulation, roofing, structural, civil and balancing.

System Commissioning

Bird conducted all start-up, testing, and commissioning and worked with the building operations team to provide training.

Additional Upgrades

These included retrofitting two ammonia refrigeration plants feeding the four different rinks.
