Bird Infrastructure Incubates New Trades Program

Values only matter if we live them. One of Bird Infrastructure's core values is collaboration. We see the diverse perspectives and abilities of our team as a tremendous benefit for ourselves and for our clients.

The Canadian construction sector faces a labour squeeze. As some of our most experienced workers approach retirement, we need talented young people to enter the trades. In order to ensure equitable access to trades training, Bird Infrastructure has committed $150,000 to Durham College's Skilled Trades Expansion efforts.

Equitable access to skilled trades training

Despite a dire need for talented young people in skilled trades, many young Canadians still foster misconceptions about trades careers. A 2021 Census Canada study shows declining employment in the trades across nearly every age demographic, but the decline is steepest among young people.

Durham College recognizes the need for more trades workers. Their commitment to building a new 60,000 square foot skills training centre will provide youth and new workers with an opportunity to receive top-notch training at a state of the art facility. It will give members of the community fair and equitable access to quality education and training in this lucrative field.

Supporting Durham College’s Skilled Trades Expansion isn’t just an investment in infrastructure — it’s an investment in people. As an alum, I know firsthand how powerful access to hands-on, high-quality training can be. Our commitment reflects our belief that a stronger, more inclusive trades sector starts with equitable opportunities for the next generation.

Growing our flock

Bird Infrastructure CEO Brandon Bird received his own education at Durham College, where he completed his level 3 Plumber Apprentice Certificate in 2012. This donation is a way to give back to his community and alma mater.

It's part of a broader commitment by Bird to increase diversity in the trades by supporting initiatives such as the annual Canadian Women in Construction event.

Investment in skilled trades training and awareness will ensure a resilient, diverse, and equitable trades economy for future generations of Canadian workers.
